MUAC is an outdoor club run by volunteers for the benefit of its members, both student and non-student. As of 2007, there are close to 300 members, with an good international / Kiwi and gender blend. MUAC is mostly undergrad students, but there are plenty of post-grad and non student members into their 30’s. The club has a weekly meeting and at least one official club trip each weekend. Club trips may be Instructional, social or just a normal outdoor trip. Members often run their own non-official trips which are advertised via the MUAC yahoo groups. MUAC administers a climbing wall in the Massey Rec Center and holds club climbing nights. The club owns the only Alpine hut on the Turoa Ski field. We also have reasonable selection of climbing and alpine gear available for hire.
MUAC has a huge amount of potential opportunities for learning new skills, making friends and experiencing the great outdoors. However, at the end of the day, you’ll only get the benefit if you put the effort in.
MUAC Meetings are held every Monday of the Semester at 7pm in ICLT.
Weekly meetings may include events such as;
Guest Speakers
Slideshows
Movies
Skills Sessions
Scavenger Hunts
Drinking at MuBar
The Monday meetings are where you are required to sign up for the official weekend trips.
Through MUAC you can participate in almost any outdoor activity. At the moment the club is involved in;
Alpine Climbing / Mountaineering, Tramping, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Caving, Canyoning, Skydiving
The MUAC Hut is the only accommodation on the Turoa Ski field. The Club uses it for Alpine Instruction Course (AIC) and Ice Climbing trips. It can be booked by both members and non members. The hut fills up fast in winter, so make your Hut Booking early.
MUAC administers the Climbing Wall in the Massey Rec Center. For a nominal fee, MUAC members can climb here on specific climbing nights. Climbing Shoes and Chalk are available for use at no extra cost. The wall is predominantly a bouldering wall. If you want roped climbs indoors, visit City Rock Climbing Gym.
MUAC has a number of Yahoo! groups. These groups are primarily for members to advertise non-official trips to other MUAC members. There is also facility for members to upload trip photos and written resources to the applicable Yahoo Group. Essentially you email a message to a MUAC group, and the server will forward that email to all of the group members. You can choose to receive individual emails, one daily digest, or just look at the messages online. The groups are moderated, so spam and inappropriate use is quickly caught.
Can’t afford some of the more expensive bits of equipment? Check out our Gear Hire, which has a good selection of Alpine and Rock climbing equipment at affordable rates.
