With the message: “Community starts with you!” students from Massey University have set up a fantastic community project. Every Saturday from 2-3pm, the group invites international and kiwi students, migrants, new citizens and other interested people to come together at the Red Cross rooms at 245 Main Street. The aim of the group is to share different cultural experiences and to encourage the use of the English language. A large number of overseas students and migrants work, study and live in Palmerston North. Moving to a new country can be a very exciting step; however, living in a new environment also means learning to adapt to new situations. The Red Cross group would like to grasp this opportunity to promote openness and tolerance among the members of our community. The new community project is a great chance to meet wonderful people from our community and to get an insight into their lives.
The involvement of students in this project is very important for Palmerston North. It is great to see students setting an example for fellow youth raising awareness of cultural tolerance and supporting vulnerable community members. Red Cross proudly supports the co-ordination and administration of the group. Currently, the Red Cross group is in the process of becoming affiliated with the Massey University Student Association (MUSA).
