WHAT ARE TRADES?

The term "trades" covers a lot more than you might imagine. In New Zealand alone we have 40 industry-training organisations that cover over 130 different recognised trade and technology qualifications.

Through completing the relevant trade qualification you could become an: aeronautical engineer, farmer, telecommunications technician, electrical line mechanic, green keeper, baker, mechanical engineer, florist, clothing manufacturer, retail manager, saw doctor, orchardist, hotel manager, road construction worker, butcher, joiner, printer, chef, tour bus operator... the list goes on.

So you see, there are plenty of options when considering a trade career. Check out the Industry Training Federation website for a more comprehensive list of trades, training organisations and possible jobs.

WHY GO INTO TRADES?

Qualified trades people are highly sought after by a variety of employers.

We live in a highly technical world where you need skills and knowledge to move forward in the employment world. Apprenticeships and other qualifications offer the opportunity to learn on the job and provide a great gateway to an interesting and rewarding career.
