Eco wars IS UNDERWAY!

That's right Student City, teams of four student flatties compete against each other, eager to save their wallets, save the world and win BIG PRIZES.

Inspired by success of the University of Canterbury's Eco-my-flat campaign, Eco Wars is the first competition of its kind to hit the mighty Manawatu and it's set to take the place by storm.

Student teams, known as platoons, participate in a series of five workshops over seven weeks designed to stretch the student dollar to the benefit of the environment.

Equipped with video cameras, platoons will document their eco adventures and contribute to an online blog as they vie for votes in their battle to take out the title of People's Choice.

There's even an incentive for landlords to get in behind their tenants, with the best landlord winning an insulation and heat pump package to the value of $5,000.

It's a pretty epic way to raise the profile of sustainability in our city... Did we mention the BIG PRIZES?

Follow Your Dreams

HAVE YOU MET THE COACH?

Behind every great team is a passionate coach and you couldn't get much more passionate than our man Coach Dan.

Ok so you get that he's a passionate Dan, but what exactly does he coach? Well, that would be you Student City. Coach Dan coaches you.

Through his motivational speeches, facebook posts and presence at city events Coach Dan tirelessly rallies our students, business people and community together in support of higher learning. He champions the benefits of this city we call Palmy. He draws new students in and makes it his personal mission to ensure those already here enjoy the experience so much it hurts.

He's a man with a plan to take this city to the top. He's your coach Student City. Huddle round and listen up!

Coach Dan's alter ego wins big!

Don't judge a book by its cover, or a coach by his stubbies and, above all, follow your dreams.

That's the message put forth by Coach Dan today as he basks in the reflected glory of comedian alter ego, turned 2011 Billy T Award Winner, Nick Gibb.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Coach Dan released Gibb on the comedy circuit just three years ago as an inconspicuous outlet for his pent up comic genius.

"I quickly learnt on the sports field that no one likes a comedian, but once I took the stage as Nick the laughs came thick and fast", he said.

Gibb has since taken out the 2010 Wellington Raw Comedy Competition crown and become a hot commodity nationwide.

Winning a Billy T Award is the ultimate in comedy kudos for New Zealand's up and comers.

Gibb beat out an extremely strong contingent to take out the yellow towel, an appearance on TV3's 7 Days and a $5,000 cheque to further his comedy career.

Dan & Kenneth

Congratulating Kenneth

Tararua College Head Boy Kenneth Metekingi took his place among legends as the secondary school winner of Student City's Win an iPad competition.

The tertiary prize went to Massey extramural student James Turipa who is currently studying health.

Both students plan to make good use of their iPads... once they've finished downloading pointless apps and playing games of course.

Kenneth attended Student City Day in March as part of the "introduce secondary students to the benefits of life in this studenty city of ours" initiative.

Coach Dan congratulated him for rallying his peers together to attend the concert day and wished him well in his quest to become a high achieving aviation student in 2012.

His exact words were "May this iPad help you fly Kenneth. May this iPad help you fly."

Congratulations Kenneth and James. We are delighted to have you both as part of the Student City team.
